The parliamentary accounts committee have urged Arua municipality to expand its boundaries in order to get a city status.
The chairperson of the Parliamentary accounts committee who doubles as the MP Aswa county Reagan Okumu said that if the municipality is not expanded, Arua will not get a city status.
Hon Okumu urged the politicians in Arua district to put aside their differences and work collectively to achieve city status for the district.
According to COA Ismail Ochegel explained that the district has played all its roles in attaining the city status. Ochengel said that they wrote to ministry of local government granting ownership of some three sub-counties to the municipality.
However Arua municipality town clerk Jamir Kairi said he notified the minister of local government about expanding the municipality to having Ayivu County, Vurra sub-county and Aiivuni sub-county as communicated by the district, but the minister of state finance, planning and economic development objected to this expansion.
The proposal for Arua to become one of the administrative cities in Uganda was made by Parliament in the 2015-2020 development plans. End
