Arua regional referral hospital mental health unit is facing shortage of drugs due to the increase in number of outpatients. The department is asking for an increment in the supply of drugs.

The health workers in this unit contend that with the increasing cases of mental illnesses in the region, the drugs supplied don’t meet the demands of the patients as such the drugs quickly run out of stock.

According to Sister Susan Candiru the outgoing in-charge of the unit, most of the times the drugs are used to treat the in-patients while the out-patients are left helpless.

Jershom Ojoku a clinical officer in this mental health unit has however called upon patients who don’t have severe mental cases to go the lower health facilities to reduce on the pressure on the drugs supplied for Arua regional referral hospital.

This unit receives close to 800 patients per month, but majority of them keep visiting the mental health unit time and again because they are not fully helped from their mental conditions. This situation is partly due to shortage of some essential drugs. End
