The leaders of West Nile through their umbrella association of West Nile Parliamentary Forum and West Nile Initiative for Socio Economic Development, are consistently pushing for stable electricity supply in the region.
Honorable Bernard Atiku the chairperson West Nile Parliamentary Forum is pleased with the progress of the engagement with the Electricity Regulatory Authority –ERA.
Drate Patrick the vice chairperson West Nile Initiative for Socio Economic Development is hoping that the ministry of Energy will stick to the one year extension of the West Nile Rural Electrification Company -WENRECO contract as opposed to the five years.
The leaders of West Nile are advocating for a new service provider to take over from WENRECO to save the region from the current power blackouts.
Issa Kato mayor Arua municipality is lamenting about the impact of the irregular supply by WENRECO.
He says the huge number of idlers in the town is attributed to the erratic power supply which renders many people idle. The mayor says other regions like Lango and Acholi have numerous mushrooming small scale factories as a result of being on the national grid thus employing many.
Isaac Newton Mukwaya the Human Resource Manager WENRECO however earlier said, the power deficit in West Nile can only be addressed by connecting the region to the national grid.
Discussions about extension of the national grid to West Nile are also on progress. According to the ongoing discussions between the energy ministry and the leaders, the service provider for the grid extension is expected to start work this month January. End
