The administrators of Arua Regional Referral hospital are stranded with a three-month old baby boy who was reportedly abandoned by her mother at the facility.
44 year old Adakuru Esteri a resident of Yole the woman with whom this mother abandoned the baby gives an account of what actually happened.
“I had accompanied my daughter in-law to the hospital when I met this woman. She first sat next to me then later gave me the child to carry as she kept on walking around. The baby kept on crying, I then asked her to breastfeed the baby. Then again she asked me to help carry the baby as she goes to the OPD to pick cotton wool that she had left there. I told her this baby cries too much and I could not handle that, but she told me that she would not delay there because she is coming back for treatment. But instead this woman went forever and has not returned until now. I have searched for her everywhere until the security guard showed up. People say this woman slept there yesterday. I don’t know if she has fled or abandoned the child. That woman speaks Lugbara and was wearing a blue dress. That woman is not young. For me I can’t take care of this baby because I am a widow.”
Meanwhile a security guard at Arua regional referral hospital Dawa Nemah says they took this baby to the nutrition unit for food
Florence Ocokoru a volunteer nutritionist at Arua hospital’s nutrition unit says they do not have attendants who can take care of this baby.
Anguyo Jimmy the Officer in charge child and family protection unit Arua central police station has cautioned the public against such practice.
Currently this baby is being kept at Arua regional referral hospital nutrition unit as the police continues to do the necessary coordination to have him fully helped. End
