Preparations are in high gear for the 2020 Provincial Peace Prayer Week to be hosted by Nebbi Catholic Diocese. This will be the 15th peace week event under the GANAL, acronym for Gulu, Arua, Nebbi and Lira dioceses. January 13-17 has been set for several activities that will mark the week. This prayer brings together Christians, politicians, traditional and cultural leaders from the Ecclesiastical Province of Gulu to pray for peace in the families, communities, country and the entire world. The 2020 Peace Prayer Week shall be held under the theme given by Pope Francis on the World Day of Peace; “Peace as a Journey of Hope; Dialogue, Reconciliation and Ecological Conversion”. Archbishop of Gulu, the Most Rev. John Baptist Odama will be joined by all the bishops of the dioceses in the event.
Regarding the importance of peace, Archbishop Odama says, “Peace is a great and precious value, the object of our hope and the aspiration of the entire human family. As a human attitude, our hope for peace is marked by an existential tension that makes it possible for the present, with all its difficulties to be lived and accepted if it leads towards a goal that we can be sure of”.
The bishop of Lira Diocese, Santus Lino Wanok is concerned about tribal pride. “In the family, where you are born, there is no need for us to be proud of our own tribe. You can only thank God that you are born so”, says Bishop Wanok.
Jeska Seila Aeko working with Justice and Peace Commission of Gulu Archdiocese says this prayer is significant. “When for example the acholi of the langi go to west nile communities, they are hosted in homes where you can socialize make contacts and promote brotherhood and sisterhood”, says Aeko, a regular participant.
The chairperson laity Nebbi Catholic Diocese, Sam Okaba says the prayer shall take place from the ordination ground at the cathedral meanwhile pilgrims shall be hosted by families. Okaba added that preparations are already in the final stages expecting to host 2,000 pilgrims.
The Peace Prayer Week is an annual arrangement organized by Justice and Peace Commission and Caritas from all the four catholic dioceses of Gulu Ecclesiastical province. In 2019, Lira Catholic Diocese hosted the event at Lango College ground from the 21st to 25th January. End. email@example.com
