Uganda Prison Services-UPS has announced a cash reward of 2 million Shillings on 17 inmates who broke out of Arua Prisons over the weekend.
The inmates escaped from prison during a riot that started during lunch hours on Saturday.
According to the Prison officials, 27 inmates formed acrobatic ladders, which helped them to jump over the prison wall and escaped to freedom.
The inmates were reportedly commanded by one Moses Adrapi, who is serving a life sentence for several murder cases.
After nearly two days the Uganda prisons has finally come up to clarify on the Saturday 21-03-2020 prison break at Arua Government prison. Frank Baine the spokesperson of Uganda Prison Services briefed journalists at Arua government prisons.
According to him on Saturday 21st March 2020, a group of about 200 inmates staged a prison break using a human ladder to jump over the perimeter wall while others were having lunch.
In the process of staff trying to intercept the escapes, three inmates succumbed to the gunshot wounds.
When one was shot while hanging on the perimeter wall and fell back in Boma, escapees under the leadership of Adrapi Moses aka Mbalia carried the body and started running a mock and tried to instigate the rest of the inmates into riot.
Fortunately the O.C was present and timely mobilized staff and invited sister forces for re-enforcement. Said Frank Baine.
He added that, A joint security forces operation quelled the riot restoring normally. Accordingly 13 prisoners were recaptured, 17 prisoner still at large and 06 nursing gunshot wounds.
Preliminary information indicates that Adrapi Moses aka Mbalia on life sentence for murder was the ring leader who mobilized committals and long termers, using the excuse of Corona virus scare, suspension of courts and burning visitations for thirty two days.
The ring leaders have since been transferred away and the search for the escapees is on. A handsome reward awaits any one that gives information on the where about and leading to the arrest of any of the suspects. He said. End
