Radio Pacis Wins Award - in the category "New Radio Station of Africa. - Wednesday, January 03, 2007The BBC World Service has sponsored a competition celebrating the excellence of English language radio journalism in Africa. Radio Pacis submitted an entry in the category of New Radio Station of the Year. The panel of judges informed the station manager that Radio Pacis has been named the winner in that category for the eastern region of Africa. As the regional winner, Radio Pacis will be judged with the other regional winners to determine a pan-African winner. The judging will take place in Nairobi, Kenya in May 2007. The news came over the internet just minutes before the regular Friday staff meeting. The staff welcomed the news of this result which they had been waiting for since they entered the competition in December 2006. On the competition website, the regional winners were described: “as New Radio Station of the Year, Radio Pacis proved that they are truly a community radio station by the programmes they broadcast from the town of Arua in Northern Uganda.” The Apostolic Nuncio, Archbishop Christophe Pierre, sent this message: “I am very happy to hear about the good news. Congratulations to all members of Radio Pacis. I pray that you may continue, not only to win prizes, but above all to spread the Gospel.” In order to qualify for this category of the competition, a radio station had to begin its broadcasting after 1 September 2004. Radio Pacis began broadcasting on 25 October 2004. In the competition there were three regions: southern, eastern and western. In the southern region, the judges did not select a winner for the New Radio Station of the Year category because the material submitted did not meet competition standards.
