The Electoral Commission has begun nominating candidates for the Adjumani West parliamentary by-election, with independent candidate Patrick Tandrupasi becoming the first aspirant to be cleared.

The Electoral Commission has officially begun the nomination of candidates for the Adjumani West Constituency parliamentary by-election, with independent candidate Patrick Tandrupasi becoming the first aspirant to be cleared.

Tandrupasi was duly nominated this morning by the Adjumani District Election Administrator and Returning Officer, Akao Eunice Christine.

Tandrupasi, who is contesting for the Adjumani West parliamentary seat for the third time, becomes the first candidate to be nominated as the two-day exercise gets underway.

Speaking to journalists shortly after his nomination, Tandrupasi said he is the best candidate to represent the people of Adjumani West, citing what he described as his bigger vision and ambitions for the constituency.

He said his priorities would include promoting commercial agriculture and introducing high-value crops such as coffee and cocoa to boost household incomes.

“I will put voters first in my agenda and ensure they thrive through commercial agriculture and enhance service delivery in Adjumani West Constituency,” Tandrupasi said.

The nomination exercise is being conducted on September 7 and 8, 2026, in line with the Electoral Commission’s roadmap.

Electoral Commission Public Relations Officer Julius Muchunguzi earlier confirmed that the nomination programme remains as scheduled.

The nominations come ahead of polling on September 17, 2026, when voters in Adjumani West will elect a new Member of Parliament following the death of former MP and Second Deputy Prime Minister, Gen. (Rtd.) Moses Ali, on July 18, 2026.

The Electoral Commission unveiled the by-election roadmap on August 3, 2026, during a stakeholders’ meeting chaired by EC Chairperson Justice Simon Mugenyi Byabakama.

Adjumani West Constituency covers Adjumani Town Council and the sub-counties of Pachara, Adropi, Ciforo and Ukusijoni. The constituency has 23 parishes, 99 villages and 114 polling stations.

With nominations now officially underway, attention shifts to the other aspirants and the campaigns ahead of the September 17, 2026, by-election.
