GOVERNMENT PROPOSES NEW REGULATIONS FOR NURSERY SCHOOLS
The Buganda Kingdom Minister for Gender and Social Development, including Education, Choltilda Nakate Kikomeko
NILE POST
Government, through the Ministry of Education, has presented to the Kingdom of Buganda proposed amendments to the regulations governing nursery schools.
The proposed regulations include setting school fees for nursery schools, limiting the time children spend in class to a maximum of three hours a day, making nursery education compulsory for all young children in the country, and prohibiting the boarding of nursery school children, among other measures.
While receiving the proposed amendments, the Buganda Kingdom Minister for Gender and Social Development, including Education, Choltilda Nakate Kikomeko, assured the government that the Kingdom would operate within the guidelines provided by the central government.
Minister Nakate welcomed some of the Kingdom’s proposals being incorporated into the new regulations, particularly the teaching of children in their mother tongues.
“We welcome the idea of teaching children in their mother tongues. If schools implement these measures, the education system in the country will change.”
The Deputy Commissioner for Education in charge of the Early Childhood Education sector in the central government, Dr. Saafina Mutumba, said the reforms were intended to help improve the quality of education from the earliest stages of a child’s development.
“These reforms have been made to help improve the quality of education for children from an early age.”
It was also revealed that many nursery school proprietors and teachers currently do not have a formal curriculum or standard framework guiding their teaching.
The Ministry of Education is therefore placing particular emphasis on verifying and improving the qualifications of nursery school teachers as part of the proposed reforms
