The territorial police in Ayivu West Division have formally launched investigations into yesterday’s mob killing of two suspected armed robbers who were lynched and their bodies set ablaze by an angry mob following an alleged failed robbery attempt targeting a Congolese businessman in Arua City.

The incident occurred at around 3:00 pm at Kawua Cell, Etori Ward, Ayivu West Division, where the two suspects were reportedly attacked by residents after allegedly shooting at a Congolese national travelling on a boda boda motorcycle.

Fresh details indicate that the unidentified Congolese national was travelling from Arua City centre towards the Democratic Republic of Congo after reportedly selling his gold when he was intercepted by the suspected robbers upon reaching Kawua Cell.

The suspects allegedly opened fire at the businessman and his boda boda motorcycle, with the rider reportedly sustaining a gunshot wound to one leg in the incident.

The shooting is said to have attracted the attention of nearby residents, who descended on the two suspected robbers, killing them before setting their bodies ablaze.

SSP Josephine Angucia, the West Nile Regional Police Spokesperson, has commended the residents of Etori Ward for responding to the incident and helping to confront suspected criminal elements, but cautioned the public against taking the law into their own hands.

“Although communities have a responsibility to remain vigilant and support security agencies in fighting crime, mob justice undermines the administration of justice and denies suspects the opportunity to be investigated and prosecuted through established legal procedures. Apprehend suspected criminals and hand them over to the police instead of resorting to mob violence, which could also result in the killing of innocent people” Angucia warned.

The police spokesperson has further appealed to members of the public to visit Arua Regional Referral Hospital (ARRH) and help identify the two deceased persons to enable their relatives to accord them decent burials.

Police investigations are now expected to establish the full circumstances surrounding the alleged attempted robbery, the identities of the deceased suspects and other details surrounding the shooting.

In 2025, a total of 950 cases of murder by mob action were reported to Police, compared to 1,016cases in 2024.
