At least 10 persons living with disabilities in Gulu city received wheelchairs to aid their mobility, a support that has been coordinated by the Gulu City woman member of parliament, Betty Aol Ocan in partnership with the Church of Jesus Christ of the Latter-Day Saints.
Honorable, Aol appealed to all leaders to take stock of the people living with disabilities so that helping them becomes easier once such support comes.
“My appeal is especially to leaders who represent the people with disabilities. Personally, I feel like none of them should be left behind, we should struggle for them, If you are a local councilor one representing people with disabilities, you should take note of the people with disabilities in your locality,” she remarked.
She added that the Community development officers should play a role in making these people comfortable in the communities because life becomes hard for them if they are not helped.
Stephen Opwonya, the chairperson of persons living with disabilities said they face many challenges but the biggest challenge is accessing these wheelchairs.
“The wheelchairs reach the medical store and the procedures for getting them from the store are very complicated, when they are sent to the hospitals, the medical personnel ask for money from us who are in need of the wheelchairs saying that the money is for joining the wheelchairs at Shs.50,000, some want to sell the wheelchairs which sometimes hinders their accessibility because we cannot afford to get such money,” he explained.
Lam Cosmas Godwin, a senior 2 student at Gulu High School who has been using a faulty wheelchair that has been given to him while he was in Primary Four expressed happiness of being among the people who got the wheelchair. “This will now address my transport challenge, I`m really very happy,” he said.
Honorable Aol said that she requested for 23 wheelchairs and only 10 of them were delivered meanwhile the church of Jesus Christ of the Latter-Day saints gave out a total 28, making a total of 51 wheelchairs.
