Persons living with disabilities in Arua district have recounted achievements as being empowered to enjoy the same standard of living as persons without disabilities.
This was during the commemoration of the belated International day for people with disabilities in Arivu Sub County, Arua district on Wednesday December 11, 2024.
The community development officer in charge of people with disabilities and the elderly Ayikoru Jean Longo says the support towards the persons with disabilities has amplified their voice for equality in the communities.
“Those days in Arua District you would hardly find children but this time people have come out to report having children with impairment, we have been accepted so much by people in the community, they help, they give us a hand, health workers have also positive attitude towards us, people no longer call us by the names that spell us, they now respect us.”

“Before we usednot to have this empowerment but this time we also get to interact with all people we used to hear like RDCs because our status cannot allow us to move to their offices but this time we have the opportunity to interact with everybody.”
The programs assistant for National Union of Disabled Persons in Uganda, James Debo Lule encourages persons living with disability to work and improve their standards of living.
“Let us only see that we are disabled no, let us work for ourselves, don’t wait for somebody to work for you, that’s why we encourage them to be in groups, save money, be able to access what you want, we are able, we can do what the other people without disabilities can do.”
