The community of Bwobo Aywaya cell in Bardege Layibi Division, Gulu City was on Friday January 10, 2025 trained by Responsive Drivers Uganda on road safety.

Joseph Komakech Ojambu, the Executive Director Responsive Drivers Uganda says engaging community into road safety campaign will help improve road safety outcomes.

Ojambo encouraged the community to always inform the police or any other stake holder on any incident of road crashes in their areas.

“When there is an incident of road crash in your area, you need to inform because traffic police is not everywhere, it is you who should be giving them information on what is happening and this the reason why we are here to empower you to give report to police and we are not supposed to fear police because they are there to help you and you should also help them,” Said Ojambo.

The Regional traffic officer for Aswa west region Carolyn Angeyo however cautioned the public about the issue of negotiating after getting involved in road accident because this is leading to the loss of lives of many people as a result of some of the victims who always deny to inform the police about such incidences.

”it Could be that you hit your head on the ground and you could even be having blood clot in your head, after three days the condition may increase then they will start demanding you money for x-ray and scan and if the condition becomes worst, the owner of the car or motor bike may dodge you and fail to help you, so please, accept to enter your case so that you are helped by the police,” Said Carolyn Angeyo.

Angeyo encouraged boda boda riders and drivers to get riding permit because it is risky for them to always use the road without a permit.

Meanwhile Santa Ongom Odong one of the participants who attended the road safety sensitization applauded the team from Responsive Drivers Uganda for giving them the training on road safety because what they learned has opened their minds on the best ways, they can use the road.

Ongom challenged the participants to always follow what they learned so that it helps in reducing cases of road crashes and loss of lives on the road which is currently so rampant along juba highway.

However, she petitioned Responsive Drivers Uganda to extend the training to other people in different areas.

Charles Olobo the area LC1 of Bwobo Aywaya cell appealed to boda boda riders to always embrace this kind of training in order to expand their knowledge on how to use the road.

Olobo emphasized that road signs like humps and zebra crossings should be put along juba road more especially where there is school.

In February 2023, Uganda Police registered 30 percent increment in fatality of road crashes with 4,178 lives lost compared to 3,210 in 2022 according to the annual traffic and safety report.
