The Bishop of Arua Diocese Rte. Rev Sabino Ochan Odoki and Vocations director Rev Fr William Abukua are appealing to parents to continue sending their children to religious institutions to serve God.
Bishop Odoki made the appeal before hundreds of Christians, who gathered at Sacred Heart of Jesus Ediofe Cathedral to witness the occasion where four seminarians were ordained to the order of deaconate on Saturday January 25, 2025.
Bishop Odoki appreciated the parents of the deacons and said it is the role of every Christian to encourage the young ones to join seminary and convent so as to become priest, brothers and sisters.
“To raise a child is not very simple I want to appreciate the parents of these deacons for offering their children to serve God and we continue to appeal to other parents to learn from them and do the same so that the children become priests, brothers and sisters,” he appealed.
Rev Fr William Abukua the vocations director of Arua Diocese advised parents to take lead in sending their children to formation houses.
“A kind reminder to our parents, the deacons we have today, three of them have completed their formations to be ordained as priests that means we need their replacements, the academic year will start in September and we need to start the recruitments now from those who completed senior six last year,” he urged.
Fr Abukua explained that some of the admission requirements, one might encounter during the application process to better understand what each seminary requires.
“The requirements that can make one to join seminary are, you must have passed in first grade or high second grade when you were in primary seven, the rector of pokea seminary has already appealed to the parishes for the candidates to enroll with the parish priests and such children should submit their hand written applications and sign them expressing their desire to become priests” he highlighted.
Seminaries are faith-based schools that teach theological and practical concepts for spiritual leadership.
Their graduates will be ordained as priests or deacons, or they might serve as lay professionals in teaching, social work, chaplaincy, or in non-profit organizations.
