GULU TO CONSTITUTE DISTRICT HUMAN RIGHTS COMMITTEE

The Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung (KAS) with Co-applicants; Chapter four Uganda and African institute for investigative Journalism are implementing a project, Human Rights-Our Concern for community action to strengthen evidence-based advocacy, protection and promotion of human rights and freedom in Uganda.
Emaasit Samson Okurut, the program manager for the Konrad Adenauer Stiftung explains that DHRC aims to foster a collective environment where duty bearers and Human rights defenders come together to discuss issues related to human rights.
“The purpose for this is consultation and we are happy that Gulu district has accepted to constitute the committee as Konrad Adenauer Stiftung and partners, we shall get back here and induct the committee and give them tools to help aid their work,” said Okurut.
Vicky Atim, the vice Chairperson for Gulu district warmly welcomed the idea and expressed that they will benefit from having the committee.
“As District, we pledge to spearhead the formation of the committee as soon as possible and will be in consultation with Wakiso to guide us so that we also establish fully and I’m happy this committee is going to be everywhere in the district and in appropriate time, we invite you to come train the committee on their role and responsibility,” Atim emphasized.

Elly Kasirye the Chairperson Human Rights Committee for Wakiso district shared some experience and how it has helped them advocate for the rights of people.
“Am happy that Gulu district has accepted to form the DHRCs because it has been the most successful tool Wakiso district has used to advocate for the rights of people, it’s going to be an opportunity to see police, judiciary, prisons can interface with the local community, to sensitize communities on how they can follow those procedures and bring this people closer,” Kasirye said.
The Project has so far been implemented in 14 districts within communities in the different districts to help handle matters of human rights violation using local context and approach.
