Four-classroom blocks have been awarded to Onduparaka Primary School and Ociba primary school in Ayivu Division, Arua City with Support from Urban Integration of Displacement-Affected Communities (SUIDAC), in response to the growing urban challenges posed by forced displacement and migration, under Cities Alliance.
Moses Etukibo the senior monitoring and evaluation officer of Arua City explained that the intervention came as a result of an assessment which was conducted by Arua City education department showing a lot of congestion in primary schools in the City.
“Four classroom blocks to be constructed at Onduparaka primary school and Ociba primary school respectively, I urge councilors and local leaders in those areas to start mobilizing people around those schools and we are going to move there as monitoring team from Arua City and Ayivu Division to do due diligence in assesement of these projects,” he said.
Samson Candiga the School Management Committee (SMC) chairman of Onduparaka primary school says the construction of the classroom block once completed will be able to reduce the congestion of pupils in the classes.
“Each classroom we have over 400 pupils sitting, this additional 4 classroom blocks will reduce the congestion by half from primary one up to primary four,” he said.
Godfrey Jonel the Deputy Resident City Commissioner in charge of Ayivu division cautions the contractors who will be undertaking the project against shoddy works.
“Let me caution the contractors who will be undertaking the respective projects against shoddy works otherwise they will face it rough” he said.
SUIDAC is implementing a four-year program, funded by the European Union with a €30 million grant, aiming at fostering the sustainable integration of displaced populations and their host communities in key cities across Sub-Saharan Africa.
