A group of youths under the umbrella of Zebra Generation, a non-profit and community-based organization, has taken the initiative to change the mindset of young people through literacy and socio-economic development activities.
The young men and women in the association aim to empower the youth to lead positive lives and engage in activities that contribute to societal change.
Their goal is to steer young people away from negative habits such as excessive drinking, disco culture, Gender-Based Violence (GBV), and other criminal activities.
During their stakeholders' engagement over the weekend at the Multipurpose Hall in Moyo, Unzimai Julius, the CEO, said the association was initially formed through social gatherings but later evolved into a movement for youth transformation in the community.
“We have laid out a strategy for literacy programs targeting the youth, with the objective of changing their negative mindset,” Julius noted.
Jurua Specioza Ruth, a member of the association, said the group started informally as a social gathering but has now grown into a platform for role models aiming to transform the lives of young people.
“We plan to reach out and impact the lives of young people as responsible men and women in the community,” she added.
Mohammed Shekimual, Head of Office at UNHCR, emphasized the need for capacity building in the community to help change the mindset of the youth.
“There is a group of young men engaging in idleness and unproductive activities, which is a wasted resource for the country. However, from what I have heard and seen today, I am confident that you are going to change the lives of young people,” he stated.
Gore Coffin, the RDC of Moyo, said that one of the key challenges facing both the district and the country is the need for a mindset change.
