Police has cautioned the Public against tempering with the scene of crime which is affecting the operations and efforts of the Police Canine Unit in West Nile region which is posing significant challenges to the canine police services in the region.

The police canine unit is a specialized unit of the Police Force that supports other police departments and units to prevent, detect, and investigate crime.

This is done through the use of specifically bred service dogs, which undergo extensive training that enables them to assist their human partners or handlers with a variety of tasks.

The concern was raised by the deputy regional police commander for West Nile Senior SP Richard Anyama during an interview in his officer and he stated that the actions of the public is affecting the efforts of police to combat violent crimes in the region.

“Most times we face challenges when we reach at the scene of crime and find that the public has already tempered with the scene of crime and it’s very difficult for us to achieve success in our investigations because the scene would have been contaminated making us not to proceed with further investigations because we don’t want innocent people to be arrested due to our canine dogs sensitivity as it picks whatever it senses there at the end of the day, someone who has not participated in the crime may be arrested innocently,” he said.

Anyama further states that the canine police dogs play a vital role in law enforcement and public safety and he cautions the public against tempering with the scene of crime.

“To avoid confusion in investigation I want to caution the public against interfering with the scene of crime and instead they should preserve it so that it’s not contaminated so as to identify the culprits because sometimes the culprits might be among the crowds who are gathered at the scene of crime to see what’s happening,” he said.
