The police of Nebbi Central Police Station are investigating an arson incident between Nyipir primary school and the community of Alenga upper village, Adolo parish, Ndhew sub-county in Nebbi district where over 20 grass thatched houses were burnt.

SP Collins Asea the regional police public relations officer for West Nile region, confirmed the incident to Radio Pacis during an interview, attributing the incident to a long standing land dispute between Nyipir primary school and the community of Alenga upper village which has taken over three year’s.

“We did register an incident of tribal clashes between Nyipir primary school community and Alenga community where the community of Alenga allegedly went to attack the community of Nyipir primary school over a peace of land which was given by the grandparents of the people of Alenga over 50 years ago and the land dispute case has been in court where the ruling was made in favor of Nyipir primary school, which angered the people of Alenga to take the law into their hands to attack Nyipir primary school and the neighboring community and in retaliation the people of Nyipir primary school also went and attacked the people of Alenga where over twenty grass thatched houses got burnt,” he stated.

Asea further states the situation is in control as investigation continues, he however appeals to the public to embrace dialogue and peaceful resolution of land conflicts without destruction of properties and bloodshed.

“Fortunate enough no one lost a life during the incident, currently the situation on ground is calm and normal as we made enough deployment on ground to stop further escalation of violence and destruction, I want to urge the communities to embrace dialogue in resolving land disputes to stop such incidents from happening and I want to appeal to the local leaders to educate their subjects on land rights and peaceful resolution of disputes,” he advised.

By press time the police of Nebbi central police station led by the District Police Commander had visited the scene and made enough deployment on ground to stop further escalation of violence and destructions of property.
