A powerful windstorm struck Amwa Demonstration Primary School in Myene Sub County, Oyam District, on April 12, 2025, blowing off the roofs of two classrooms and disrupting learning for 530 pupils. The storm also destroyed educational materials of unknown value.

Head Teacher Achola Harriet Jeneth described the terrifying experience, stating that Primary Three and Four classrooms were left roofless, leaving learners stranded. She expressed deep concern about how lessons would continue, especially during the rainy season, and called for urgent intervention.

Labo Santos Omeny, Chairperson of the school’s PTA, confirmed the disaster, noting that Amwa Trading Centre was also affected. He urged parents and stakeholders to attend an emergency meeting scheduled for Wednesday to mobilize resources for reroofing while awaiting government support.

David Adea, Acting District Education Officer of Oyam, promised to send an inspector to assess the damage and compile reports to facilitate aid from the Prime Minister's Office. He also mentioned plans to construct two new classroom blocks under the school maintenance grant.

Encouraging schools to embrace tree planting as a climate resilience measure, Adea highlighted the challenge at Amwa Demonstration Primary School.

Currently this school which has an enrollment of 1,756 pupils lacks sufficient classrooms many of which are old and dilapidated.

The roof was thrown a distance from the block.
