Secondary schools in West Nile have been called to strengthen patriotism clubs in their schools as a way of curbing the immoral acts among the students which are seen as the greater contributing factors to the looming strikes in West Nile secondary schools.
Over the past years, the rate of strikes in secondary schools in West Nile has been at its peak with massive destructions caused to the infrastructure raising concerns among the public over the kind of future citizen.
Speaking during the opening of a 5 days training for patrons of patriotism clubs I West Nile at Muni on Tuesday April 15, 2025, Maxwell Dramadri the head teacher Arua public secondary school and chairperson Association of Secondary School Head teachers in Uganda for Arua city attributed these to lack of being patriotic.
“We still have a very big challenge of drug abuse our schools and this vice can only be fought when the learner have that mindset change by instilling the patriotic ideology in them,” Dramadri said.
Meanwhile Umikowum Cointa Okello the head teacher Zeu secondary school and chairperson ASSHU in West Nile interested the patriots to equally consider loving and protecting their environment.
“The environment we have is seriously suffering degradation if we don’t take care of our environment then our grandchildren will live in a very fragile environment, when we take care of our environment, it means we love our environment,” Umikowum pleaded.
But Aliwaru Deizzy Philliam the national coordinator of Uganda National Institute for Teacher Education UNITE campuses in Uganda challenged the national secretariat of patriotism corps to roll the program in all the stages of education in Uganda.
“For us to get a very good result out of this knowledge and skills we are giving we must start even with the nursery school teachers, then it goes to secondary, the interest appears to be so much only on the secondary, we are leaving out nursery and primary who are the spokespersons to this young generation, many universities have been left out,” Aliwaru castigated.
The regional training for the patron s of patriotism clubs about 130 participants from the secondary schools.
