In order for youths to be productive in the community, different Community Based Organizations (CBOs) and implementing partners, despite limited resources, are continuing to provide skilling opportunities to both refugees and host communities in Palorinya Settlement, Obongi District, to help them become productive members of the community while also reducing the high crime rates.

Kaya Henry, one of the community trainers with Youth Empowerment Initiative, YEI, a CBOs operating in the settlement of Palorinya, says they have been offering financial literacy and training opportunities to both refugees and host communities to promote peaceful coexistence.

“With these skills, they can be able to budget and also have a small savings for themselves and use in their productive lives like doing farming and entrepreneurship ventures” Kaya notes.

Michael Adrawa, the chairperson-elect for Keguru Village, points to poor dressing and drug abuse as some of the factors preventing youths from securing jobs.

“Youths are left behind for these reasons, one, and the issue of their dressing code which has led them not to get jobs coupled with excessive drug abuse.” Michael reveals.

He added that most youths end up drinking and using other drugs, despite being among the most educated youths in the community.

Despite the opportunities offered to youths through financial literacy trainings, the CBO YEI is also doing its best to unite the various communities in promoting peace building.

Adowa Emmanuel, one of the youth leaders in the office of RWC Two, Zone One, appreciates YEI for its efforts.

“Let’s continue to work as a team and pray we do some development in Uganda, as we get a lot of the skills and knowledge we will go back to South Sudan and change our country, thank you so much YEI,” he stated.

Duku Kennedy, the Youth Secretary for Unit D, Zone One, Keguru Village, says he has been uniting youths and keeping them busy through games and sports.
