Joshua Cheptegei’s record attempt misses the mark in Ostrava but sets world-leading time in the 3000m

Uganda’s Jacob Kiplimo produced a stellar performance at the 2021 Ostrava Golden Spike to finally secure his 10,000M Olympic ticket for team Uganda.

The 2020 World Half Marathon champion clocked 26:33.93 to beat the Olympic qualifying mark of 27:28.00.

Jacob Kiplimo’s latest exploits in Czech Republic ranks his 26:33.93 time seventh in the world in the history of the 10,000m race.

Uganda’s Joshua Cheptigei is the current 10,000M race world record holder after overthrowing Kenenisa Bekele with a world record time of 26:11.00 last year in Valencia.

In the last event of the day, Joshua Cheptegei failed to become only the 3rd person to hold three world athletics records (3000M, 5,000M, 10,000M) at ago after failing to beat the time record of 7:20.67 set by Kenya’s Daniel Komen almost 25 years ago.

Pressure was on the 25-year-old Ugandan athlete who holds the current world Athletics records in the 5,000M and 10,000M race with all the media attention on him weeks before he set foot on track.

Cheptegei who was making his debut in the 3,000M race managed to win the race but he was powerless to break the record after managing to finish in a distant time of 7:33.24.

His fellow Ugandan Oscar Chelimo came 3rd after clocking 7:43.00, behind Paul Chelimo of United States of America who clocked 7:41.69
