CHANCELLORS URGE GOVERNMENT TO WAVE OFF TAXES ON PRIVATE UNIVERSITIES

University Chancellors under the Uganda vice chancellors` forum have asked for subsidy and tax wavers for private universities from the government during their 73rd general meeting that was held at Gulu university.
The vice chancellor of Gulu University prof. George Openjuru Ladaah who is also the chairperson of Uganda vice chancellors` forum appealed to the government to come to the aid of the private universities in form of tax wavers and subvention since taxes applied on teaching and learning materials are expensive, noting this has created a big gap to private universities since cost is high and both public and private universities contribute in promoting higher education.

Similarly, Prof. John Mugisha Vice chancellor of Bishop Stuart University Says a lot of challenges are faced by private sector such as work permits for staff who come to teach from other countries that are too costly, heavy taxes that have become very big problems on teaching and learning materials yet they are majority that produce a greater number of graduates.
Prof Eriabu Lugojji the Executive director of the UVCF said the forum is one stock Centre for universities to strengthen the digital framework and advised chancellors to work together to help fight and deliberate matters arising.

The University Vice Chancellors’ Forum (UVCF) was constituted in 1997 established by a dedicated group of Vice Chancellors and Heads of Institutions who recognized the value of having a united voice and sharing lessons on mutual concerns.
UVCF enhances the sharing of knowledge, information, and practices, and advises the government on various policies to promote university education. Additionally, it publishes works and engages in activities aimed at promoting higher education in Uganda.
