The Resident district commissioner Obongi has condemned the failure by Uganda National Roads Authority (UNRA) to maintain the deplorable state of Obongi – Moyo road which has seen mobility halted as vehicles and Motor bikes face difficulties while passing through.
According the RDC, he did write a letter to the station manager of UNRA Moyo office directing them to work on the road which has become impassable causing break down of many vehicles and motorbikes hence closing down the road because of people’s lives being at a risk. “There are three areas that have become a very big challenge due to flooding. And so I have requested UNRA to repair the road, if they can’t repair the road, I have requested to temporarily close it out for public use to avoid disaster happening,” he noted.
He added that the water level has continued raising which can easily lead to more dangerous disasters if not managed.
Meanwhile Hon Hajji Abib Buga Khemis the LC five chairperson Obongi district called for urgent intervention by the government on the road that has continued to even affect public service delivery with more emphasis on referral of patients. “We need government to do something very urgently if not it will be very difficult for cases of referral where we always refer our patients from Obongi to Moyo including the persons of concern who are in the settlement,” he noted.
Whereas Bhoka George the area Member of Parliament for Obongi County said the road is at verge of been blocked due to the floods which is close to one kilometer of water. “From government perspective, when a natural disaster of that nature happens, the first step for the district disaster management committee of which the RDC is a member is to come on ground to carry out assessments called repaid situation assessment,” MP Bhoka said.
Bhoka stressed that after the assessment an emergency report is prepared by the district disaster management committee and urgently communicated to the prime minister
Getting Response from the spokesperson of UNRA, Mr. Ssempebwa Allan said they are ready to intervene once the water level has gone down as a committee has been sent on ground to monitor the situation. Allan added that Moyo team is on standby to monitor the situation.
