KITGUM MUNICIPALITY HOSTS WORLD PEACE DAY CELEBRATIONS

Hundreds of peace advocates in Acholi Subregion last Saturday converged in Kitgum municipality to commemorate World Peace Day, an annual event organized by PEACE TOGERTHER UGANDA (PTU) a non-profit organization based in Pajule catholic parish in Pader district.
Archbishop Emeritus of Gulu Archdiocese, Dr John Baptist Odama who was the main celebrant during the world Peace Day cautioned the general public in Acholi sub region against disunity.
He also challenged the religious leaders, cultural leaders and political leaders to work hard to bring people together because that is one of their core responsibilities. “As leaders one of your core mandates is to unite people and make sure that they peacefully coexist and live in harmony with one another,” he remarked.
Hon. Onekalit Denis Amere, the Member of Parliament for Kitgum municipality implored those who attended the event to embrace peace and foster unity among themselves. “I ask those of you who have come for this World Peace Day celebration to let the messages of peace that the various speakers spoke sink in our hearts and we should challenge ourselves to do more in promoting peace and unity,” he stressed.
Minister of state for economic monitoring in the office of President Hon. Beatrice Akello Akori who was the guest of honor appealed to the general public to be involved in all the peace building efforts. “I call upon all of us to renew our commitment in promoting peace for us to have peace our homes, our schools and in the community, so am requesting that lets us continue to work together to build a Uganda where every citizen regardless of their background can live in harmony and dignity in our society,” she noted.
This was the 25th anniversary for world Peace Day celebrated under the theme, “our commitment to the global goals”.
