Teachers in Moyo district have continued to echo the need for salary increment sighting that what they earn now cannot fully sustain them throughout.  This they say if effected will build on their self-esteem which in turn will improve performances.

Mr. Ocen David the chairperson Uganda National Teachers Union UNATU Moyo branch said government had relaxed with it promises to the teachers. “The government has relaxed to spice up the teachers, we urging the government to look at the fair enumeration of the teacher, let the teachers be very confident, vibrant and have full esteem.” Mr Ocen said.

Not only in Moyo district, Mr Amale Ben Mua, District Education Officer in Charge of Special Needs says teachers nationally are crying for salary enhancement.
“this year’s teachers day, I  started trembling I was wondering what it could mean, I found its thought provoking to the effect that the teachers want to shout a louder voice than ever before, we want to request that today don’t only listen but also act.”

Mr Cayiga Martins, the proprietor of St Martins School appealed to relevant leaders to address the matter of teachers to improve performance. “They need to hear the cry of the teachers, our cry and see the suffering of the teachers. The loans they claim teachers have is not a result of drunkardness, it’s because of the problems and responsibilities they face such as fees payment, family managements, suffering due to small amounts of salary.so if others can get salary of 20 to 30 million, teachers salary is 400,000ugx to 500,000ugx plus a loan of 200,000ugx a times, it’s a concern that needs to be addressed.” Mr Cayiga appealed.

Hon. Aleru Tom Aza, the area MP for Moyo district says teacher stands to be valued, “Teachers must be celebrated, and they are the implementers of the education policy both formal and informal. Informal education is got from home before going to classrooms, but when we come to formal education, it’s the teachers who impart into us this formal education. We can therefore value their voices for a new social contract by wooing them, luring, enticing and attracting, motivating them by giving them attractive salaries or allowances. If we are not going to do that, my dear colleagues in the teaching fraternity, we shall experience brain drain. Remember in history, most of the teachers went to teach in South Africa and Rwanda because they were not being motivated here.” Hon. Aleru said.

Whereas, Hon. Min. Moriku Joyce Kaduchu, the minister of state for primary education called for patience as government continues enhancing the salaries in a phased manner. “We cannot have a firm education system, and for that matter to be a teacher is not only to teach, as a teacher you’re a role model, you’re a mentor, you nurture the young ones, and you coach them and taught them to be what they are today. All of us are under your teaching.” Hon. Min. Moriku appealed.

World teachers’ day is celebrated annually on October 5, the theme of this year’s celebration was, “Valuing Teacher Voices: Towards a New Social Contract for Education”
