Micheal Waigo Otika, the Senior Accountant for Adjumani District, has died following a road accident. The incident comes as the district was preparing to receive the body of the Okusijoni Sub-county Local Council Three (LC3) Chairperson, Dominic Arambe, who passed away on November 11, 2024, after an illness at Lacor Hospital in Gulu City.
According to a preliminary police report, the accident occurred at around 7:20 PM on November 12, 2024, along the Adjumani-Gulu Highway near Ruyo Guest House in Adjumani Town Council.
A red Toyota vehicle with registration number UBD 625N, owned by Bresto Company Limited and Right to Play, was driven by 33-year-old Bakulubanga Jackson.
It collided with a blue Yamaha motorcycle, registration LG0057/02, belonging to Adjumani District Local Government, which was being ridden by Waigo Otika.
Ignatius Dragudu, the North West Nile region police spokesperson, confirmed that Waigo Otika died on the spot and attributed the accident to reckless driving by the Toyota's driver.
Adjumani District Local Government expressed their condolences on social media, stating their sadness at Waigo’s passing.
Resident District Commissioner Peter Taban Data called for increased vigilance from road users on the newly constructed Adjumani-Gulu Highway.
The district has recorded 26 road accident fatalities and 71 injuries in the past eight months. Dragudu emphasized the need for heightened community awareness of traffic rules to minimize accidents.
The body of Otika was taken to Gulu Military Hospital Mortuary for a post-mortem, while the driver of the vehicle was detained at Adjumani Central Police Station.
