The Archbishop of Gulu ecclesiastical province , His Grace Raphael P’mony Wokorach, has urged believers to contribute generously towards construction of the  expansive  Devine Mercy Church,  formerly Christ the king church in Paidha Parish, Nebbi Catholic diocese.

Devine Mercy church is situated in the heart of the business-oriented Paidha town council, Zombo district.

The Prelate made the remark as he launched the fund-raising campaign for the church on November 19, 2024 at Mayors garden in Paidha town council, commending believers for pushing for the construction at the roofing level.

The Archbishop who is still the apostolic administrator of Nebbi Catholic diocese, called upon believers to maximally contribute, emphasizing on the numerous “positive spiritual impact it will have on the catholic community”

Since Church’s survival relies on donations that sometimes come through weekly offerings and tithing from members, the Archbishop  noted that “we need to mobilize funds to push us further because donor support is drastically decreasing and they are attributing it to Continuous war in different parts of the world”

The prelate believes the church building upon completion will house thousands of believers, thus contributing to the expansion and development of the church.

The construction of the all-embracing church structure has been dragging for years, though several fund raising campaigns had been conducted to boost its construction.

Hundreds of branch-waving believers, leaders across all works of life thronged Paidha Cultural center, ravishingly tendering in their monetary and material support, as a sign of their full commitment of completing the church.

He later changed the name from Christ the king Catholic Church to Devine Mercy Church, noting that the Diocese doesn’t need duplication of church names. He said Nebbi Diocese had about four Churches with similar names, which to some extent creates confusions.

The MP for Okoro county Gabriel Okumu, who was represented by his campaign manager Tito Ocamgiu , called for support from other leaders and well-wishers,  upon offering  Ugx 10 million  cash towards the church construction.

Elizabeth Nega, a politician vying for the position of the woman MP Zombo in the 2026 race, who offered some cash and pledged 500k towards the church construction lauded “unity exhibited by leaders “during the fundraising campaign.

Biblically, a church building is important because worship would be more difficult without it.

Amos Jacan, the youth chairperson Zombo district, rallied youths and other community members to support the church, emphasizing its impactful spiritual benefits.

Meanwhile Sam Kumakech, the director of Youths and sports at Alur Kingdom, said “we need to unite regardless of our party affiliations, religion and tribe to erect the house of the lord”

Historically, Devine Mercy church that started in the early 2000s came at the right time to ease pressure on Oturgang Catholic Church, due to the increasing population of Paidha town council, which is predominantly from Catholic denomination.

Devine Mercy Church started at Zingili Cell, Zingili Ward by a small group of Christian community, and was later shifted to Alengukuma cell due to insufficient space under the then administration of Bishop Linus Wanok.

The Archbishop of Gulu ecclesiastical province Raphael P’mony Wokorach, said “the church building is considered an important part of Christian worship and it will help accommodate many Christians”

More than Ugx 20 million was realized from the fund raising campaign, with many giving their commitment through pledges.

The remaining construction of the all-embracing church that is at roofing level, requires Ugx 360 million, according to the church construction committee.

At the event, the Archbishop also confirmed over 700 children in the sacrament of Holy baptism.
