Increased number of expectant mothers seeking for maternity services in Arua regional referral hospital is causing congestion in the facility hence affecting service delivery and access of maternity services.
According to the recent statistics from the hospital, the maternity ward delivers over 600 mothers monthly and out of this, over 260 are delivered under caesarian section and over 330 are referral cases.
Stella Orodriyo, a mother who was operated in the maternity ward says, mothers are taken off the admission beds after operations, and discharged before the right discharge time,
“Last year I came to give birth in this hospital, I was operated, in this hospital if you are operated today, you are given a bed, the following day you taken off the bed to lie on the floor, and after that you are discharged earlier to go home when you still have a lot of medicine, we don’t have clinics to treat the medicine and yet it’s the dose given to help you” Orodriyo said.
Dr. Victor Afayo the incharge of the maternity ward says, the insufficient space in the ward makes them to limit the time for keeping mothers already operated at the facility as many more come for the same,
“Sometimes we discharge on day number two, day number three after being done caesarian section, the reason is space, if we congest all of them there and we don’t discharge on day two, day three, then there is nowhere to keep them, it’s not necessary that you should be kept here for days, after all if we keep you here for long, you may end up getting other infections and it may become a problem,” Dr. Afayo said.
However, he tasks the health center fours in the different districts to get more operational as a reliable solution to the congestion in the maternity ward at the referral hospital,
“We have wide spread health center fours which must be functional, if you are a district leader, make sure you functionalize, so if they are not functioning well, it is one of the reasons why Arua hospital is getting congestions, so we sit down and plan for them,” said Dr. Afayo.
Arua hospital receives referrals across the West Nile region and the neighboring countries, according to the head of the maternity ward in the hospital, the full operations of the health center fours would allow them to handle mostly the referral cases.
