Arua Regional Referral Hospital (ARRH) struggles with the challenge of lack of enough staffing which affects service delivery in the different departments in the hospital as it receives a big number of patients daily.
Several departments are affected by this challenge, including the maternity ward that delivers over 600 mothers monthly.
In the first ever community dialogue organized by the hospital to discuss concerns of the members of the community, Lucy Adiru, a community member said, the insufficient number of the staff at the hospital delays health service delivery.
“They want to serve you but the numbers are very limited, they are very few, this nurse or doctor have been working throughout the day so if you don’t want to befriend them you will not get the service you want,” Lucy said.
Meanwhile Dr. Victor Afayo, the in charge of the maternity ward in the hospital says, the low service provision in the health center fours also makes patients to rash to the hospital, causing congestion and delays in service provision,
“We have wide spread health center fours which must be functional so if they are not functioning well, it is one the reasons why Arua hospital is having bad outcome, congestions and so on,” said Dr. Afayo.
However, Raymond Oyikuru, the principle human resource officer for the hospital confirms that, plans are underway for recruitment of over 100 staff to address the challenges caused by insufficient staff in the hospital,
“We have received wage, we allocated wage worth four billion and we have received clearance from ministry of public service, we will recruit 127 staff to add on to the current, we have identified critical areas and different service delivery points where patients have been taking a lot of time due to understaffing,” Raymond said.
Arua Regional Referral Hospital receives patients across the West Nile region, and also from the neighboring countries like South Sudan and Democratic Republic of Congo.
