Traders are raising alarm over the failure by Arua central division authority to manage the garbage at Arua City Abattoir amidst the ongoing renovation works at the facility.
The abattoir is the only modern abattoir in Arua city serving both Arua central division and Ayivu division but has been facing poor sanitation concerns in the recent years.
Safi Alidriga who works with Arua livestock traders and meat sellers Association in health department says it’s the responsibility of Arua central division council to remove the waste products from the facility.
“Those days it was Council that always comes and removes the waste from here and dumps it in the Ewuata composite site, but this time they are not doing well and I don’t really understand why they are not collecting the waste these days,” he wondered.
Dr Isaac Odongo Ray the veterinary officer in charge of Arua City abattoir explains some of the reasons why animal waste products have accumulated at the facility without being collected.
“There has been challenges with waste management here at the facility since we have been experiencing too much rain in the recent months, although Arua central division made an effort to bring a machine to remove the wastes, it was not fully completed because the machine they brought was small in size and it got stuck. We are hoping for the weather to be good in around February or March so that the waste can completely be removed and the place well leveled,” Odongo explained.
Responding to these concerns, His Worship Muzaid Khemis the Town Clerk of Arua central division says given the financial challenges, the council is committed in addressing the issue but encourages farmers to make use of the animal waste products as animal feeds and manure in their farms.
“We are coming out to have the new modern abattoir where we shall generate natural fertilizer, the manure will be properly packaged and sold under the latest technology that we are going to put in the current area that we have fenced otherwise, we are going to work on the accumulated wastes at the abattoir as Arua central division council,” he stated.
