Arua city boxing club on Sunday March 30, 2025 (Eid Day) will hold boxing games which is aimed at raising funds towards supporting a number of Ghetto youths and former drug addicts who have since left drugs and are now in school but lack support in form of scholastic materials and fees.
The event to be held at the Arua city leisure park in Barifa behind the UNHCR offices brings together fighters from different clubs within the city with the maiden fight between 2 persons with disabilities (Little persons or persons with short stature) one Badman Ecoruku from Arua city and another from Soroti.
There will also be other bouts including Safiki Vs Surtan in the mosquito weight category, lady Shifra VS Jiddi (a male) and Aki vs Dudu among others
Oshino Rashid, the president Arua city boxing club in an interview with the media says beyond the fundraising the event will be as a motivation to the other children towards joining boxing as a sport.
“This is a fight that normally takes place in the gym but this time because of fundraising and other things, we decided to bring it to this level. So that the children can actually come with their relatives to see how their colleague children fight in the ring, which will actually give motivation to them to join boxing as a sport,” Oshino noted
Aluma Ayub assistant at coach Arua city boxing club says there has been limited support towards having outdoor fights but with a positive mindset among people, boxing as sport is gradually picking up.
Aluma appeals to the public not to always imagine that training boxers is a way of creating insecurity by training thieves.
The president of the boxing club further says that a lot has changed with the children after they joined the cub boxers.
“I am seeing from the ghetto children who have joined school that, their level of discipline has improved. These children have been using drugs in the past but because of trainings, some have left drugs while we are still in the process of gradually puling others out of the same. I have also been following them up to school as a parent and guardian. They have very positive feedback in the various schools they are in with others even acting as prefects in the schools. This is a sign that they have changes a lot,” he added
The boxing games will be open to the public at a fee of 2,000 shillings for the children and 5,000 shillings for the adults with the proceeds to be channeled towards supporting former ghetto kids and reformed drug addicts in the club.
