About three hundred farmers in Arua city have received maize and soya beans seeds distributed under operation wealth creation to boost agriculture, fight house hold poverty and promote money economy in the communities.
Arua city received two tons of maize seeds and one turn of soya beans from Equator seeds limited, and these were distributed to the selected farmer beneficiaries from Ayivu division for planting.
Opigo Johnson, the city production officer implores that, government supports agriculture in such initiatives with the focus of ending house hold poverty, which requires the beneficiaries to play their part,
“The government is looking at 2040 to get poverty out of our households, and one of the vehicles for doing that is agriculture, that is why government is investing a lot and these are improved seeds that will never go wrong when we do the right thing,” Opigo said.
Robinson Draga, the city agriculture officer says, farmers were only selected from the wards where planting can be done on large scale as the seeds were not enough.
“If you take the coverage and the land size that is suitable for farming, actually these seeds are not enough, to select who is supposed to benefit was a little bit hard for us, because the demand was skyrocketing, there are some wards that are close to the business center, they do not qualify for this because we set the standard that each farmer must go with a quantity that can plant an acre where by follow-ups can be done, for maize we considered two hundred farmers and one hundred for soya beans,” Draga explained.
Arionzi James, one of the beneficiaries appreciates the initiative, and encourages his colleagues to follow the directives. “Am happy about it, I will do my best to ensure that it takes me to a higher level when I get the yields, I expect my colleagues to use the seeds for planting, not for consumptions,” said Arionzi.
Colonel Loti Dradria, the city operation wealth coordinator cautions the beneficiaries against misusing the seeds saying, they will be followed up for the expected results,
“We have done registration and got the GPS of every farmer that has prepared his farm, now these are not for sale, not to be eaten, it is for production such that you market it, if you also have other interests in agriculture like piggery, poultry, you can also now manufacture this to feed your animals,” Dradria said.
According to the officials, the quantity of seeds received was divided by the number of the wards considered for the distribution to get the number of beneficiaries from each ward, and the beneficiaries were registered at work.
