The Arua main market daycare facility has started operations four years since it’s opening in 2022.
The Crane nursery and day care facility started operations this year under private ownership.
The in charge of the day care Ayikoru Consolate says most of the children at the day care belong to the market vendors.
Consolate was quotedas saying, “Actually all the children here majority of them belong to the market vendors, they come and sell and bring the children here and at lunch time they come and pick they go and eat and they bring them back, so when the time comes for then to close, then they come and pick them and go home, because we have to pay the people who take care of them the vendors pay here and we also take some money and pay to the market management.”
Though most of the children at the day care belong to the market vendors some mothers are still working with their children.
Janet Okunia, a mother to says she is still not financially stable to have her child at the daycare.
“We were told about the day care …. As for me the business I do does not yield much money though it is a good thing but can’t embrace it yet but the vendors in the market know.”
Florence Dawa a vendor dealing in tomatoes says she is uncertain about sending her child to the day care.
She said, “I have not yet reached there so I need to first understand how the place operates before starting to use it. The school they have put up here is good but it is also bad the reason as to way it is bad is because it is on the market’s first floor and there can be a fire outbreak any time, am sacred because of that and secondly the government built for us this market and we pay the areas and everything and now we also have to pay for the day care, I thought since the government had put up the place to help us and they would also assign people to help in case of emergency they would carry the children out but none of that is in place.”
However the town clerk of Arua central division Malik Drakuma has encouraged mothers in the city to make use of the facility.
“The day care service is not only there to accommodate the babies of breast feeding mothers in the main market it is there for every other mother who is working that day care service is for all of you that day care still has more vacancies I am meant to understand that out of 40 or 50 they have had so far had 20 let’s all embrace that service,” Malik appealed.
The daycare center which is located on the first floor of the market has a capacity of more than 20 pre-school going children designed to support women traders and entrepreneurs to smoothly operate their business.
