The construction works for the 4.6 billion Regional Election Centre located on Plot 2, Municipal By-pass in Arua City has reached 95% completion.
The construction works was handed over to the National Enterprise Corporation (NEC) of the Uganda Peoples Defence Forces (UPDF) on December 15, 2023.
The project was expected to end on December 15, 2024 but has been pushed up to this year.
Lt. Alfred Niwamanya the site engineer for National Enterprise Corporation (NEC) the company undertaking the construction gives updates on the current state of the project.
“The work is at 95 percent and the 5 percent remaining is attributed to the heavy rains we received in the months of November last year which affected the external works and other related sequential works but the remaining works are only on the compound and few works like internet which can be done in union with the client,” he revealed.
The centre will equally act as a nomination and results tallying centre, according to information obtained from the electoral commission.
According to Juma Shesha the regional election officer for West Nile, the regional office complex is the first structure owned by electoral commission in the whole country.
Juma noted that, “the regional electoral commission complex which is under construction is almost coming to an end and according to our plans the commissioning is supposed to be done this January but there were some delays with construction works as advised by the engineers from the ministry of works, so we expect the work to be done this month or early February which is a great development to this region and we should proud of, as the people of West Nile.”
Once completed, the regional office which is expected to have office space and warehouses will enable the electoral body to conduct a range of administrative work, data processing, training, and storage of electoral materials before they are transported to the Electoral Commission headquarters in Kampala.
