The West Nile Parliamentary Caucus has endorsed a five-year support initiative led by Hon. Phiona Onzima, MP for Ayivu West Constituency, aimed at enhancing the welfare of expectant mothers during childbirth.

Announced during her thanksgiving ceremony in Pajulu, the initiative will provide every pregnant mother with a mama kit, bars of soap, and a basin. These items will be stocked at all health centers in Ayivu West to support safe and clean childbirth.

Hon. Onzima emphasized that the initiative reflects her dedication to improving maternal healthcare services and assisting vulnerable families within her constituency.

“How do you expect parents who cannot afford three meals in a day to buy mama kit of 15,000/= because during my campaigns my women were telling me that they are being charged for 15,000/= for mama kits at health facilities, that’s one of the reasons why we are having high mortality rates in our health centers, we are losing mothers because of such simple necessities we are lacking in our health centers,” she said.

Members of the West Nile Parliamentary Caucus, through Hon. Muzaid Khemis, MP for Arua Central Division and treasurer of the caucus, contributed financially to support the initiative. They also pledged to back similar efforts by other MPs across the region.

“We have come us West Nile MP’s to back-up Phiona in her project of donating mama kits to expectant mothers in her constituency because it looks bad for a woman who is coming for delivery at a health center to not have a bar of soap and mama kit,” he said.

Hon. Fungaro Kaps Hassan, Chairperson of the West Nile Parliamentary Caucus and MP for Obongi County, praised the collective support from MPs and reaffirmed their commitment to serving the people of the West Nile region.

“We as MP’s are very busy people, I want to appreciate those who were able to come and send their apology and contributions to express support to Phiona, this is the spirit I encourage from my members of West Nile parliamentary caucus and we shall continue to corporate and work for the people of West Nile region,” he noted.

Mama kits are essential packages containing basic sterile supplies that promote clean and safe childbirth, significantly reducing maternal and newborn deaths. The sterile components protect both mother and newborn from life-threatening post-delivery infections and sepsis, thereby improving overall maternal health outcomes in the region.

This collaborative effort highlights a strong regional commitment to maternal health and community welfare through practical support and resource mobilization.
