A section of residents in Terego District are holding traditional elders responsible for the rising cases of domestic violence, which they say is fueled by unclear border issues.
Afeku Joel, a resident of Bileafe Sub County, describes the situation as a huge challenge. "The unclear borders have led to frequent disputes, which often escalate into domestic violence because most elders are not clear about land boarders." Joel said.
Meanwhile, Sunday Drapari, a resident of Omugo Sub County, appeals to the elders to start advising the youth on the importance of resolving disputes peacefully. "The elders should take a proactive role in educating the youth on how to manage conflicts without resorting to violence," Sunday said.
Afimani Rophine, another resident, notes that most families in the district are affected by the border disputes, leading to family breakdowns. "This has led to an increase in hatred in many families and my appeal is that, let the elders potray good example for children " Rophine said.
However, not all elders are being criticized. Lonzino Adutia, an 83-year-old elder from Oriama Sub County, is rallying his colleagues to be agents of peace when it comes to land-related issues. "We must take responsibility for resolving these disputes and promoting peace in our communities," Adutia said.
The residents are urging the district authorities to work with the traditional elders to find a lasting solution to the border disputes and reduce the cases of domestic violence in the area.
