The Democratic Party leaders and members in West Nile region have endorsed Counsel Alitia Elia as the Democratic Party presidential candidate for 2026-2031 party elections.

Candidates vying for the various elective positions in the region on Democratic Party ticket were as well unveiled during the party’s press conference held at Heritage Courts Hotel in Arua City.

While speaking during the press conference, Alitia Elia the outgoing Democratic Party vice president for northern Uganda, explains some the reasons that have pushed him to contest as the party President.

“I have been here at the regional level serving a political party whose top leadership is rotten, absent, unconcerned and not caring about the affairs of the party in the whole country and at regional level because of that Democratic Party has hugely been divided without any political direction where we have a party president who has been in power for fifteen years with no tangible evidence of accountability to give,” he said.

Sunday Asau who serves in the office of the vice president of Democratic Party northern Uganda and vying for the position of deputy national secretary for international relations says the party’s national leadership are serving their own interest but not the interest of the party.

“We have a party well-resourced but looted to a level where it does not function, I want to start as deputy president internal relations because I am aware that bosses do not work it is the deputies who work so I am going to this position to organize our international relations as a party and nation,” he said.

Jaffar Alekua the clerk to council Lugbara Kari during the Democratic Party press conference, advised the Democratic Party leadership to own educating the electorates in order to achieve the objectives of the party.

“It is therefore very important for political parties to sensitize the electorates, 87% of whom are young, they do not know what multi-party democracy is and only 13% know what multi-party democracy is, so we need to inform and educate electorates,” he said.

The Democratic Party, is Uganda’s oldest political Party, which has existed over 60 years but the party has embarked on a vigorous and aggressive campaign to regain grassroots support and membership in local councils and parliament in the upcoming 2026 general elections.
