Education stakeholders in Moyo District are emphasizing the importance of co-curricular activities, particularly sports, for learners. This follows the commencement of the Post-Primary Ball Game 1 for secondary schools in the district, which kicked off on Wednesday, March 12, 2025.
Edema Wilson, the Games and Sports Officer for Moyo District, highlighted the benefits of children participating in sports, particularly for their health.
"Sports play a vital role in everyone's life, and every child is expected to participate with discipline. Engaging in sports helps prevent communicable diseases that affect children because we cannot teach sick learners. We want our children to be active and healthy. Those who think sports is a waste of time should understand its value. I encourage all schools to fully engage in sports," emphasized Edema.
Meanwhile, Akuku Robert, the Head Teacher of Fr. Bilbao Memorial Primary School, noted that sports expose children to talent development and enhance academic excellence.
"When our learners are exposed to sports, they have a future both in terms of talent development and academics. Participation in athletics and football refreshes their minds, and when they return to class, they perform better academically," Akuku explained.
Additionally, Inyasio Andrali, the Local Council Chairperson III of Moyo Sub-County, highlighted the broader benefits of sports and called on parents to encourage their children to participate.
"Many people have succeeded through sports, and I know several individuals who have gained education and better lives through it. I urge parents to allow their children time to explore their talents. This could open opportunities for scholarships and bursaries, benefiting both the family and the individual. Let us take sports seriously and show the world that we have talent," Inyasio stated.
Games and sports have had significant value and impact beyond the local level, extending across the world.
