The Rotary Club Moyo has urged members of the public to go for regular medical check-ups to establish their health status and take preventive measures against cancer and other non-communicable diseases.
The call was made during a charity run organized by Rotary Club Moyo on Sunday, August 30, aimed at raising awareness about cancer and encouraging healthy lifestyles in the community.
Moyo West County Member of Parliament and State Minister for Trade, Industry and Cooperatives, Aleru Tom Aza, encouraged the public to adopt healthy lifestyles by staying physically active.
“Our lifestyles, reckless lifestyles, lead to non-communicable diseases, so you need to be careful,” the MP said.
Moyo District Chairperson Vukoni Jimmy said the run was also intended to fight the stigma associated with cancer and encourage people to seek medical attention early.
“We need to awaken our people so that they can have regular check-ups. Don’t wait until cancer overwhelms us, because it can kill us,” the LC5 Chairperson noted.
The Moyo Regional Police Commander, Joseph Mwesigye, who participated in the run, said cancer is a disease that requires collective efforts to fight.
“It’s a disease that we need to fight through exercise and healthy eating habits. Make sure you eat food that will not expose you to cancer,” the RPC advised.
Speaking on behalf of Rotary Club Moyo, Joyce Angwa described the event as one of the biggest cancer runs organized in Moyo since the initiative was introduced in Uganda about ten years ago.
“This has been the biggest one for Moyo, and I want to appreciate you people for coming to stand with us,” Angwa said.
