Residents living in both refugee community and the host in the districts of Terego and Madi Okollo have been urged to desist from the distraction of natural resources.
According to the leaders, instead of cutting down trees for the various human activities, they should be planting more trees to save the environment.
Drajiru Stella, Female Councilor representing Uriama Sub County to Terego district local government said, women contribute deeply to the distraction of the natural resources.
“Women are the one cooking in the kitchen, we are not connected to the national grid, and it’s the reason as to why most of our women here cook using fire wood and they contribute a lot to the distraction of trees,” she pointed.
According to Onzima William Madi Okollo District Natural Resource Officer, charcoal business led to environmental degradation since the two districts are not connected to the natural grid.
“One area we have noted is the issue of the burning of charcoal and deforestation which is to do with cutting of big trees where people always cut down trees for firewood causing disaster to the environment,” he pointed.
Onzima added that mostly 95% of the population in Madi Okollo are relying on trees not knowing that they are destroying the environment causing change in the weather pattern.
Ralph Weir, private sector advisor British high commission said, he has witnessed several factors that has continued to affect the environment saying it needs a lot of awareness as he appealed to the various stakeholders to work hand in hand with journalist for continued sanitization.
“You see every day this long time dry season, the speed that affects your crops, your livestock and we all need knowledge to decide how to respond and journalists play very important role in this,” he revealed.
