Authorities of Moyo District have called upon the communities to engage themselves in vegetable growing during this dry season other than sitting to wait for the rains.

From December to March, West Nile region is dry and for many of the stakeholders, this time is enough for growing vegetables which is economically profitable.

Mr. Agwe Jonathan Aliko the sub county chief for Metu says, vegetables are profitable especially during this dry season.

“We are all farmers, this is the time we can prepare the land such that when rain comes we are ready for planting, we can plant vegetables and even do things like brick laying this dry season.” Mr. Agwe said.

Mostly vegetables are grown in small quantities in many communities for consumption. However Hon. Dulu Samuel an LC 3 chairperson suggests increase in production and value addition.

“Let’s use this opportunities for producing for market and also add value to our produce so as to be competitive for local and neighboring markets.”  Hon. Dulu suggest.

He also added that famers should not focus on local market but be able to reach out to far markets.

Meanwhile, Hon. Asusi JB Sam the district secretary for production and natural resources mentioned that people can be involved in growing many vegetables in large quantities.

“It is the right time, people can use wet lands using guided procedures where they can plant vegetables, it is right time for preparing land for next plantation.” Hon. Asusi JB said.

The Hon. called upon the people in the district to use the dry season productively.

Yearly more percentage of vegetables consumed in the region comes outside the region now prompting continuous advocacy for growing vegetables within the region.
