In a significant development for the health sector, Hon. Santa Alum Ogwang, the Oyam District Woman Member of Parliament, in partnership with Community Focus Initiative (CFI), has launched a five-day free dental health camp.
The camp is set to begin on March 3, 2025, and will run until Friday, March 8. It will be conducted at Iceme Health Centre III in Oyam North and Acimi Health Centre III in Myene Sub County for Oyam South.
Christ Ongom, the Vice Chairperson of Oyam District and Alum’s Political Assistant, stated that the camp will take place for three days in Oyam North and two days in the South Constituency.
He explained that the initiative aims to improve dental health, recognizing it as one of the most common health complications that often receives less attention.
Ongom highlighted that during the health camp, Alum will cover all expenses, including feeding, transport, accommodation, and allowances for the medics, making it entirely free of charge.
He urged the community, especially dental patients, to take advantage of this opportunity, emphasizing that it is not politically motivated. In the next phase, MP Alum plans to consider a cervical cancer health camp.
Patrick Omara Olwol, Senior Medical Officer in charge at Anyeke Health Centre IV, confirmed that dental sickness is a major health issue at the facility. He noted that out of 200 patients received daily, at least 20 present with dental cases.
Despite the overwhelming number of dental patients, Anyeke Health Centre IV offers limited dental health services, such as teeth cleanings and simple tooth extractions, with more complex cases referred to other facilities with better services.
Omara advised that there is a need for well-wishers and partners to consider extending these services to Health Centre III facilities in various sub-counties to serve a larger population.
Nyana Gloria Mercy, a patient who has suffered from dental sickness for over three years, expressed her gratitude to MP Alum and Community Focus Initiative for this timely development. She urged her fellow dental patients not to miss this golden opportunity.
This is not the first time MP Alum has organized a medical camp. Last year, she brought health experts who served a number of patients with cervical cancer.
