Government-aided schools in Moyo District have recorded an impressive turn-up of both teachers and learners following the suspension of the industrial action by the Uganda National Teachers’ Union (UNATU), which had kept learners out of class for over a month due to salary enhancement demands.

By Monday, 20 October 2025, several primary schools across the district had resumed normal teaching and learning activities.

Magwi Ubha Heldrine, the Head Teacher of Besia Primary School, said the school received about 80% of both learners and teachers on the first day of reopening. “Since Monday, we have received about 80% of learners and teachers, and lessons began immediately, we needed t catch up with the lost time so far,” Heldrine said.

He added that to recover the lost time, learners are reporting to school earlier and leaving later than usual, with increased focus on remedial teaching, revisions, and homework.

Asiali Rose Alba, the Head Teacher of Moyo Girls’ Primary School, said that out of the total enrolment of 210 pupils, 181 turned up on the first day, and by the second day, attendance had reached 100%.

“Before the strike was called off, we were already planning to engage parents to see how best to support the learners,” Asiali explained. “Once we received the message that the union had called off the strike, we went ahead with our Annual General Meeting to hear from parents about how they could contribute—especially to support teachers with basic items like soap.”

She also outlined the school’s plan to recover the lost time, saying teachers have already begun reviewing the curriculum and summarizing topics in the form of questions and answers. “We intend to use more discussion methods to cover a wider range of content instead of the usual teaching approach,” she added.

At Fr. Bilbao Memorial Primary School, Head Teacher Akuku Robert reported a good turnout of learners and urged parents to send all their children back to school without further delay. “My appeal to parents is to ensure that learners who have not yet returned join others this week. If they continue to stay home, they will miss a lot,” Akuku said.

The return to school marks a crucial step in restoring learning continuity after weeks of disruption caused by the teachers’ strike.
