During the 6th Graduation Ceremony of St. Anthony Counselling Training and Skills Development Institute in Gulu City, the Chancellor of the Institute Monsignor Martin Agwee who doubles as the Vicar General of Archdiocese of Gulu advised the graduates to do their work diligently without prioritizing money in their profession, so as to save people’s lives.

“Being part of the church, you have got some values from here, that element of sacrifice, service to the people should also be in your mind. Let us not put money first. The same thing we say of those who are in the medical profession, I think it is good to save life before, then you can ask for money. Some people want money first in their account, then they begin the work,” he explained.

The Deputy Gulu 4th Division Commander, Col. Jackson Kayanja, agreed with Monsignor and advised the counsellors to spread peace with love.

“They should not seek money first but let them love what they are doing for the people. Without love you cannot deliver. So, to our graduates, love the people you serve, money will come later. As you are graduating as counsellors, it should not be only about mental health. People need counselling in many ways, counsel them about peace and security, without peace you cannot counsel anybody, we need peace in our country Uganda, where there is peace, we can do anything,” said Col. Kayanja.

The Chairperson Governing Council for the institute Rev. Fr. Dr. Michael Lawrence Komakech also called upon the graduates to pray continuously while practicing their profession, to seek guidance from the Lord.

“Be compassionate in your service to the people because your profession goes together with prayers, let me put it like that. You cannot be a good counsellor, you cannot be a good psychologist if you don’t pray because what you are dealing with is a very slippery mind. You are dealing with the mind, and you don’t see what the mind looks like. You may see the person you are counselling but you cannot see the mind. So, you need to go spiritual also,” he added.

The Institute graduated 88 graduates, 60 were female and 28 males.
