The increasing level of teenage pregnancies in both Lefori Sub County and Lefori Town Council is raising concern among youth leaders in Moyo District.
This follows reports indicating that the greater Lefori area is leading Moyo District in teenage pregnancy cases among young girls aged between 13 and 15 years.
Tami Philip Inima, a community leader, says the cases are increasing due to what he describes as negligence by parents who do not adequately supervise their children.
“Issues of teenage pregnancies, Lefori and Lefori Town Council are on the lead in the whole district. Lefori took the first position in early teenage pregnancy. This sounds very alarming. That is a serious blow for the chairpersons of Lefori Town Council and Lefori Sub County,” Tami said.
Manga Alex, the Local Council Three Chairperson of Lefori Town Council, notes that teenage pregnancy has affected the education of both girls and boys.
“Children drop out of school because of conceiving at a young age, and even the boys who impregnate these girls, in most cases, run away because of fear. They know that they have committed an offence, which is affecting their education, affecting both the girls and boys, and in fact affecting the development of Lefori,” Manga noted.
Teenage pregnancies is mainly attributed to a combination of factors, including poverty, limited sexual education, and limited access to reproductive health services.
