Radio Pacis, Uganda Red Cross Society and Uganda blood transfusion services and other partners have commenced with the annual blood donation drive aimed at increasing blood units in the regional blood bank as part of the radio’s Corporate Social Responsibility.

Radio Pacis newsroom visited Oli health center IV in Arua Central division, Arua City to check the supply, demand and the common cases that requires blood transfusion at the health facility.

Dr Mozey Wani the In-Charge of Oli health center IV explained the regional blood blank always endeavors to supply their facility with blood units.

“The regional blood bank always does their best to supply us with blood but there are some instances where we need blood but it’s not available especially during obstetric emergences which requires blood which may not be here at our facility and at the regional blood bank, what our team does in such cases is to move up to Kuluva Hopsital and other places to look for blood but the regional blood bank always does their best to supply us with blood” he said.

Wani further noted the most common cases at the facility that requires more blood are postpartum hemorrhage and anemia in children.

He encouraged the public to participate in the Radio Pacis blood donation drive, stating that every unit of blood donated can help save a life and bridge the blood shortage gap in the regional blood bank and other health facilities in West Nile Region.

“so as human beings we have not yet figured out the technology to manufacture blood the way we manufacture other drugs, blood can only be got when me and you go to regional blood bank or regional blood bank find us where we are during blood donation drive and we donate blood because we don’t know when we shall need it,” he added.

The need for safe blood is universal; safe blood is critical both for treatments. It can help patients suffering from life-threatening conditions live and with a higher quality of life and supports complex medical and surgical procedures.
