A-level teachers in Moyo District have raised concerns about the challenges they face in teaching under the new curriculum.

Their struggles stem from unclear guidance, a lack of adequate teaching materials, and insufficient training on the new A-level abridged curriculum extension for Senior Five.

As a result, they are relying on shared soft-copy guidelines from the Ministry of Education and Sports in an effort to adapt.

Amimu Jerome the director of studies A-level working in Moyo star high school expressed the challenges which he says are due to lack of resources provided to the school.

“Ideally when we talk about the new curriculum, there is some bit of hind because it is abridged and we are now trying to marry the two syllabuses the new and the old curriculum and then the challenges we have so far we have not yet gotten resources the books and space for research is still limited even the teachers, there was a training conducted on zoom that could not update teachers properly and many of us who are teaching A-level did not have access to understand the concept and the training. So in line with teachers’ capability, there is some bit of gambling here and there so I think the government needs to look into it and possibly have what is called routine training or refresher polishing so that we teachers catch Up,” expressed Jerome.

Meanwhile Alule Abubasad Ijotre the headteacter Moyo town secondary school said as a school, they only enroll students under the new curriculum.

“As a school we have enrolled in the admission students who have sat under the new curriculum because we felt it is the continuation of their learning from the previous level which is the new lower secondary curriculum but to me as an administrator I see that they are going to have a challenge’’ said Alule.

However Munyasa Richard the deputy headteacter Moyo senior secondary school lamented that they trying to cope up with the bridged curriculum extension both the teachers and learners are fully engaged.

“Since we have received the soft copies of the syllabus our teachers are fully engaged in teaching the senior fives based on the new curriculum, the students are also adopting so well because the content for the new curriculum is as well based on the old content and they are actively attending the lessons to understand the curriculum,” lamented Munyasa.
