The youth of Lefori Town Council and Lefori Sub County have been urged to desist from drug abuse and embrace income-generating activities. The call was made during the recent celebration of the belated Youth Day 2026.

Youth leaders say Lefori Sub County and Lefori Town Council are leading the district in drug abuse.

Tami Philip Inima, a community member, says most youths in Lefori spend much of their time and resources on drugs instead of engaging in productive activities.

“In the whole of Moyo District, Lefori took number one in drug abuse. That sounds very bad because our money is for Marungi, our money is for smoking, our money is for nonsense. We need to change as youth because our lives are at risk. We shouldn’t die young because of these drugs,” Inima stressed.

Meanwhile, Manga Alex, the Local Council Three Chairperson of Lefori Town Council, says drug abuse is ruining the lives of the young generation and calls upon the youth to desist from the vice.

“The challenge of drug abuse, which is the most rampant in our area, more especially chewing marijuana, alcohol and opium, is really common and destroying the lives of our young people. So, I am urging my youth in Lefori to desist from this kind of activity for them to build a better future,” Manga urged.

Equally, the Councilor representing the youth, Weli Emmanuel, appeals to young people to desist from drug abuse and embrace income-generating activities.

“Let’s avoid drug abuse. I am told in Lefori it is the worst, and I have always observed that whenever I visit the market, it is happening everywhere under mango trees. All sorts of substances, others are known, others come all the way from Central and Western Uganda with different names. I therefore encourage every young person, to reject drug abuse,” Weli emphasized.

Drug abuse poses serious risks to a person’s physical health, mental well-being and social life, with prolonged use potentially causing lasting harm.
